Hot water repairs and gas fitting in Newcastle
A practical guide from Flow Plumbing Solutions: what is going wrong with your hot water, whether to repair or replace, and what to know about gas work in NSW.
Signs your hot water system needs attention
Most hot water problems announce themselves before the system gives up completely. Watch for:
- Lukewarm or inconsistent water. On electric storage systems this often points to a failing element or thermostat. On gas, look at the pilot or ignition.
- Water dripping from the relief valve pipe. A small amount of dripping while the system heats is normal. A steady flow is not.
- Water pooling around the base of the tank. A leak from the tank body itself usually means replacement rather than repair.
- Rusty or discoloured hot water (but clear cold water), which can mean the tank is corroding inside.
- Rumbling, popping or hissing noises from sediment build-up or scale on the heating element.
- A system that is more than about 10 years old and starting to need regular attention.
Repair or replace?
As a rule of thumb, a small fault on a younger system (a thermostat, element, valve or gas control) is usually worth fixing. A leaking tank, repeated failures, or a unit well past its expected life (storage units are commonly around 8 to 12 years) is often better replaced. The model number and age are on the compliance plate on the unit, so have a look before you call.
Electric, gas, heat pump or solar?
If you are replacing a unit, the right type depends on your household size, existing gas or power connections, roof orientation and budget. Electric storage is simple to install. Gas gives fast recovery for larger households where gas is already connected. Heat pumps use far less electricity but need outdoor space and some noise tolerance. Solar suits a sunny, unshaded roof. Describe your home on the phone and we can talk through what fits.
Gas fitting: why it is not a DIY job
In NSW, gas work must be done by a licensed gasfitter. That covers connecting a gas hot water system, cooktop or heater, adding a bayonet point, and fixing a suspected leak. Gas appliances need correct ventilation, flueing and pressure testing, and mistakes can be dangerous.
What to have ready when you call
- Brand and model from the compliance plate, and roughly how old the unit is
- Whether it is electric, gas, heat pump or solar
- What you are seeing (no hot water, leaking, noises, smells)
- Where the unit is and whether access is clear
Having that on hand lets us work out what parts or replacement options to bring. For the full list of what else we do, from blocked drains to bathroom installs, see the Flow Plumbing Solutions website.
